In her opinion, the importance of ensuring all students feel they can be themselves at school cannot be underestimated. For this reason, she encouraged her middle school students to explore how identity affects people’s place in society, and how society impacts how identity is expressed.
“This lesson showed me that students are willing to empathise with others, but sometimes need assistance from teachers to understand who they are, how they are unique, and how they can understand and support people who are different from themselves,” she writes.
