In this video, we meet Yusuf, a teen member of Broken Hill’s small Sufi Muslim community, whose life is filled with all the common activities of a growing adolescent, but with the added twist of faith and community service.
Broken Hill is an inland mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia.
Other than his school responsibilities, Yusuf spends his Sundays helping his mother prepare baked goods, while also taking part in the studies and devotional prayers of his faith, which he feels guide him towards a virtuous life, serving others.
Given his strong desire to give back, he is already adjusting his early life plans – from playing AFL football fulltime, to becoming a healthcare professional. Because, as he says, his religion encourages him to have “an honourable job, one that gives, not takes, and helps people in the community”.
