Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which noble houses control planetary fiefdoms, ‘Dune’ tells the tale of young Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis.
While the planet is an inhospitable, sparsely-populated wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or “spice”, a drug extending life and enhancing mental abilities, while also providing a multi-dimensional foresight that’s vital for space navigation.
Ultimately, the narrative’s epic scope explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology and human emotion, as factions struggle to win control over Arrakis and its harvest with Herbert’s epic tale unfolding over a six-book saga spanning millennia. But every story of Arrakis’ future begins here, with ‘Dune’.
(Beyond the novel itself, a recent film adaptation of ‘Dune’, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and starring Timothée Chalamet, was released on October 21, 2021, to generally positive critical reviews.)
