Meet Thomas Stevens (1854–1935), the first person to circle the world by bicycle. He rode a large-wheeled Ordinary, also known as a penny-farthing, from April 1884 to December 1886, and wracked up more miles on the road than most people will – even in our present age.
In keeping with his thirst for adventure, Stevens later also searched for the journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley in Africa, investigated the claims of Indian ascetics and ultimately ended up becoming manager of the Garrick Theatre in London.
In short, he was a bold and endlessly restless soul, willing to reinvent himself continuously and harbouring a thirst for new vistas and new experiences.
