In this video, taken from Season 1, Episode 10 of CULTURESCOPE, host of the popular web series Paul Lambis interviews Nina Shamtanis, founder and managing director of Femina Plus a learning centre and social club for women.
The unique platform empowers women to interact socially, establish strong business ties and exchange ideas that could potentially lead to new professional opportunities, supported by a team of local and international experts from a range of disciplines.
It would be fair to say that the initiative speaks volumes for Shamtanis’ phenomenal entrepreneurial drive.
“Whatever I think will benefit the island, will benefit businesses, will benefit women, I’m going to do that,” says Shamtanis.
Having cut her teeth in the commercial flight and beauty industries, and worked in 12 different countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the US, when life eventually brought the Belgrade native to Cypriot shores, Shamtani felt she wanted to use her professional experience in order to give back.
“I would like to work in something more than a beauty industry,” she had thought at the time. “I would like to enter the world of women entrepreneurs – women who want to grow, who have ideas – and to give them kind of a support.
“So, I started working on that programme and this is how Femina Plus was born. Where the idea is to – in one place – create a platform of women, who will come and who will grow, not only professionally, but also personally,” she says.
Acknowledging the fact that the island’s entrenched patriarchal views of women can be limiting, the Femina Plus founder is adamant that the women with whom she has crossed paths are very well-trained educationally, and experienced enough to hold any role – even to become president of a country.
“I would really like to see this happen one day,” she continues, “because there’s so many fantastic candidates, but also I would like to see them more as a members in parliament.”
Ultimately, Shamtanis is drawn to those who stand out and will settle for nothing less than excellence in their professional endeavours.
“I like to work with people who are successful,” she explains. “I like to learn from them, I like to be positive, and I like to surround myself with such people, because I want to pick up the best and implement it in my work.”
