From the slogan ‘skateboarding is not a crime’ to the sport’s Olympic debut, for many young people, hopping on their beloved boards represents more of an alternative lifestyle and a community rather than a competitive discipline.
So, for skateboarding to go from counterculture to the most mainstream of sporting events is, to some skaters, considered a sell-out.
For other skaters, however, Olympic skateboarding is the inevitable next step for a multi-billion industry with major professional competitions. Most importantly, the evolution stands to transform how the world sees skateboarding – and the young people who skate.
