In this video, we are taken on a virtual, 24-hour tour of New Orleans, world-renowned for its distinctive music, Creole cuisine, unique dialects, and festivals like Mardi Gras.
Known by many names, including ‘The Big Easy’ and ‘The Crescent City’, New Orleans is a consolidated city-parish on the Mississippi River, situated in the US state of Louisiana. It was founded in 1718 by French colonists, and its historic heart remains the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street.
In this city, people dance at funerals and hold parties during hurricanes, world-class musicians make ends meet busking on street corners and hole-in-the-wall dives dish up gourmet Creole cuisine. But there is melancholy here, too, not least because of the ongoing effects after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the stark differences between its rich and poor inhabitants.
That said, New Orleans is still a treasure to explore, and well worth your time to discover, whether you have only a day, or longer to savour its unique character of irreverence, resilience and love of life.
